Longterm storage requires more than simply placing items in a unit. Proper preparation
ensures your belongings stay in great condition for months or even years. Start by
cleaning everything thoroughly. Dust, dirt, and moisture can cause deterioration over
time, especially on fabrics and wood. Once clean, make sure items are completely dry
to prevent mold and mildew.
Next, choose the right packing materials. Sturdy boxes, bubble wrap, furniture covers,
and plastic bins offer better protection than flimsy alternatives. Avoid using plastic bags
for longterm storage, as they can trap moisture. For clothing and linens, vacuumsealed
bags are ideal because they reduce bulk and shield fabrics from dust.
When loading the unit, elevate items off the floor using pallets or shelving. This protects
them from potential spills or condensation. Leave small gaps between boxes to
encourage airflow, and avoid stacking heavy items on top of fragile ones. Finally, label
everything clearly and keep an inventory list so you always know what’s inside. With a
little preparation, your belongings will stay safe, clean, and ready for use whenever you
need them.
